George Rust-D’Eye

George Rust-D’Eye is a born Torontonian, who has lived in Cabbagetown since 1973. A former member and Chair of the Toronto Historical Board, he worked with Peggy Kurtin to help establish and develop the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, and has contributed to supporting the designation by the City of Toronto of a large number of buildings and properties as being of historical,  architectural and cultural significance under the Ontario Heritage Act.

In recent years, he has worked on identifying and supporting the designation by the City Council of Heritage Conservation Districts In the Cabbagetown area.

Professionally, George practised as a municipal lawyer from 1973 to the last year, and served for a number of years as Metropolitan Solicitor for the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto.  He has provided legal advice to a number of Ontario municipalities over the years, and served as Integrity Commissioner to a number of them.  George is the author of several books, one on Cabbagetown —Cabbagetown Remembered (1984) — and is currently writing a second book on the area.
